Adoption is clearly very important to God. There are quite a few Bible verses that either speaks directly to adoption or relate to it very well. These gave me comfort throughout the long adoption process. And, they still speak to me deeply. Whether you are in the process of adoption, considering adoption or just need some encouragement, I hope you take a moment to pray through these verses and see if the Lord may want to say something to you through them. If adoption is not a part of your personal story, maybe there is a family that you know of that is touched in some way by adoption. If so, consider praying for them as you read these truths from God’s word.
Psalms 68:5-6a
“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families…”
What a blessing that God sets the lonely in families! Not only does he place the lonely in families. I truly believe He places children in exactly the homes they are meant to be adopted into to make the entire family whole. This can even extend to the biological parents being accepted and cared for through the adoption process.
Matthew 18:5
Wow! This verse seems so simple but think about those words for a moment. God has a heart for children so much that He says when you receive a child you receive Him. This applies to more than adoption but adoption is a beautiful example of this.
Matthew 25:40
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Again, God speaks of His heart for children, and for adoption, in this verse. But, this goes even beyond that. I feel the importance of this in how we treat and interact with our children’s birth parents, and how we honor our open adoption. We have the opportunity to accept them, rather than judge them. We have the opportunity to always keep in touch with them as promised and be a light in their life.
